Description:

This climb is scheduled from 9/25-27, and we'll drive down on the day before, Wednesday, 9/24 and camp at Whitney Portal. This climb will ascend the generally non-technical but not-the-easiest-route-on-the-mountain Mountaineer's Route up California's Mount Whitney from Whitney Portal on a 3-day climb. Most of this climb is cross-country route-finding and some 3rd-class climbing. After picking up our permits, we'll camp at Upper Boyscout Lake on the 25th, attempt to summit Whitney on the 26th and camp again at Upper Boyscout Lake that night, then hike out and start the drive back to Eugene on the 27th. Additional fees will include a $15 climbing permit per person as well as part of the campground fee on 9/24 and potentially 9/27.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: Backpack with 3-liter water capacity; helmet; harness with 2 prusiks, 2 locking caribiners, and a belay device; warm layers including hat and gloves; rain gear; hiking boots; food enough for two nights and three days out in the backcountry; sleeping bag, pad, and either bivy sack or tent; headlamp; and space for a bear-proof canister (and a bear-proof canister if you have one). Additionally, bring items to be comfortable during two days of driving: food, cash, a book, comfy clothes, etc.
