Trip Report

We left Eugene at 6 a.m. Wednesday, drove all day, and after many road construction delays, reached Lone Pine at 9 p.m. We then drove up the hill to Whitney Portal (the Whitney trailhead and and campground), and slept for about four hours near the trailhead. This was the ultimate day-hike - we started on the trail at 3 a.m., hiking with headlamps for two hours until daylight, then on up the mountain amidst some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country. George and Andy Jobanek reached the top at 9:40 a.m., Jane Engert, Ken and Mary Frazer about an hour later, and Buzz Blumm (leader) got within a "stone's throw" of the top, before being forced back by a violent lighting storm. We stayed Thursday night at the El Rancho Motel in Bishop, CA, then drove back to Eugene on Friday.
