Description:

We will be climbing the standard route on the south side. It is moderately steep snow and will involve an overnight of camping at around 9000 feet. We'll drive up early Sat, hike up to high camp, then get up at o'dark thirty and climb, descend, hike out and drive home. It's a big day for sure...about 6 Pisgahs...but at higher elevation.

Trip Report

We started hiking from the trailhead at about 2 PM and arrived at our camp at 5:30. The rock-walled sites at 8800' were snow free and dry so we were pleasantly surprised since we had heard folks were camping on snow. We spent a lovely evening melting snow for water for dinner and for drinking the next day. At 4:30 AM the alarm went off and the climbers began to stir. By 6 AM we were off. The route was thick with other climbers, but because it is a big mountain, we had plenty of room. We summitted a little after 9 AM and had glorious views of the surrounding peaks. The snow had softened on the way down and so it was safe to glissade. Starting at Pikers Peak (aka the False Summit) we were able to glissade for over 2,000 vertical feet. Though our butts were frozen, we were joyful when arrived at the bottom of the glissade track. We hiked back to our camp, packed up and slogged out in the slushy snow. We got back to the cars around 3 PM, happy for our climb. And as tradition dictates, we got huckleberry shakes in Trout Lake.
