Description:

This longer, out-and-back route to Mt. June begins at a turnout from a generally passable gravel road off of Eagles Rest Road near Dexter. The trail climbs about 2 miles and 1200 feet through the forest to a T-junction with the Sawtooth Trail. Turning west, the route traverses the ridgeline, with some ups and downs, about .6 miles to the junction with the Mt. June trail. This relatively steep, .5-mile section climbs the final 550 ft. to the summit. There may be a few downed trees to climb around and over, and possibly some mud, along the way. Weather permitting, we will have nice views with lunch. Wildflowers seem to be a bit late this year and I'm hoping for interesting blooms both in the forest and at the summit.

Trip Report

On one of the first hot days of summer, nine of us drove the paved Eagle’s Rest Road near Dexter to unmarked Lost Creek trailhead. The switchbacks to the first ridge warmed us up quickly, and we appreciated that most of the trail passed through deep, cool forest. At lower elevations we saw several interesting mycoheterotrophs (plants mostly lacking chlorophyll that get nutrition from fungus attached to the roots of a host plant) including Merten’s and striped coralroot. Eagle-eyed Janet spotted candystick and pinesap. We crossed over the head of Lost Creek where it emerges from the hillside, found one calypso orchid, and climbed over and under two log obstacles. A lovely rock garden near the summit of Mt. June included sedum, larkspur, rosy plectritis, littleleaf montia, and paintbrush. At the summit were fawn lilies, cliff penstemon, cat’s ear, and more sedum. The clear view stretched from Mount Thielsen in the south to snowy Mt. Hood. After lunch and photos, we headed back down the trail to cold drinks, the satisfaction of a good hike with a good group, and the drive back to 90-plus-degree Eugene.
