Description:

We'll be meeting at 3pm on SATURDAY, August 12th, leaving ShopKo at 3:15pm. Climb starts Sunday morning before dawn, time TBD, but likely on the trail by 5am. Camping location TBD but close to the trailhead, campsite in the area vary in costs from $11.50 to $23 for up to 5 people per site, cost will be divided between climbers.

The climb to the top of Oregon's 10th tallest peak is a long, strenuous hike. The first 2 miles or so are in the trees provide a nice warm up to what lies ahead as the trail steepens. Be prepared for the potential of lots of sun above treeline. There isn't any true scrambling, but there is considerable "rocky walking" near the top; minimal scree which is a nice change from the rest of the crumbling Oregon Cascades. There is a great summit area for many people to hang out if the weather is good and the group is feeling and moving well. The overall pace will be moderate with regular rest breaks.

Trip Report

Our group traveled to the Fish Lake area the evening before the climb to get a short night of sleep before an early start; thankfully the helicopter picking up water for nearby small forest fires finished it's job before we needed to crawl into our tents. We started before sunrise and were rewarded with a nearly empty trail on the ascent and for a short time we had the summit to ourselves. We had a great view of Mt Shasta to the south, but the north was obscured by smoke. Some in the group were new to Obsidian Climbing tradition and introduced to Summit Treats (also known as Leader Treats). All in the group made it to the summit; it was a beautiful day to be on a mountain.
