Description:

We will be climbing Mt.McLoughlin, the 5th highest mountain in the Cascade Range, and the 19th highest in Oregon. It towers above the densely forested Sky Lakes Wilderness in Southern Oregon. We will be leaving the trailhead at 5am. There will be no officially organized carpooling. Please review the Covid-19 protocol on our website prior to signing up.

Trip Report

Our tenacious group of 4, braved the newly smokeless skies, hoping for no new fires or changes in wind direction, in order to climb Mt. McLoughlin. We opted for a Sunday climb, rather than our original planned Saturday attempt, as the terribly needed rain was falling hard on Friday evening, when we planned on camping. We left the trailhead at 6:06 AM, donning headlamps for the first mile and a half of our accent. We were happy to see clear blue skies as we got higher towards tree line. The sunrise was beautiful, and the company was wonderful. As predicted, the wind was barely blowing, and it was warm. We reached the summit at 10:16 AM, and got to sit awhile and have lunch. Several other groups were beginning to arrive, so we grouped up for the beginning of our decent. We made it back to our vehicles at exactly 2:00 PM, and i handed out summit stickers to our climbers. (the stickers are the best part) I couldn't have asked for a better day and group for my first lead of a climb. Maryanne was a great assistant, and our other climbers were fun and engaging.
