Description:

We'll be taking the standard route up Mt. Thielsen. Four miles are on well established trail. The last mile up towards the summit gets progressively steeper, involves some class 3 scrambling before the final class 4 scramble/climb to the top. We will protect the final climb up the summit pinnacle and plan on rappelling off the pinnacle.

Leader note: Climb leader is leading Mt. McLaughlin on Sunday, so will not be returning to Eugene on Saturday night.

Trip Report

The group of Obsidians barely found a place to park in the Thielsen parking lot at 8am on Saturday morning. Making quick work up to the 'chicken ledge' we found the summit packed - over 15 people were reported to be on top of the mountain as we waited for our turn. We made good use of our time - enjoying summit treats early and taking in the view. Our patience was rewarded, by the time our group made the one pitch climb to the summit there was only one other person on top. After a quick rappel off the top, and tracking down all of the car keys, the 5 Obsidians made their way back out to the trailhead. Four in the group had more on their plate for the weekend - and caught a brief view of Crater Lake on their way to Mt. McLoughlin.
