Trip Report

Five climbers began hiking the PCT at 7 am under beautiful sunny skies. The group was diverse, with a participant from Ashland, another from Portland, and two for whom it was their first Obsidians climb. There were no mosquitos, but lovely flowers. We hit snow at approximately 6,000 ft and were able to ascend off-trail directly to the ridge while cutting off approximately a half mile from the typical approach. Snow shoes were carried but unnecessary. One climber opted to remain at the PCT junction while the rest of the group ascended the West Ridge. As the ridge turned into slope, snow gave way to clear volcanic rock and we stashed our snow shoes and axes under one of the lone trees. Four climbers summitted with no others in sight while clouds slowly grew overhead. We descended in fine conditions, taking one stranded hiker with us who had the confidence to hike to the chicken ledge but not enough to descend alone. The hike out was slow given that our guest was uncomfortable navigating deep afternoon snow in his running shoes. We celebrated in the parking lot with three different types of tortilla chips.
