Description:

Leave town at ~6pm on Friday night, drive to Thielsen trailhead and spend the night. Saturday morning we'll have a quick breakfast and begin our climb at 5am, hike up the Mt. Thielsen trail until we reach the PCT, where we'll take off on the climbers trail. Once we reach Chicken ledge, we'll set up a fixed line for all to ascend. We may set up a rapell for our descent. We'll retrace our steps back down the trail to the trailhead and head home Saturday evening. I expect the climb will take ~10 hours car to car.

  • Supplies and Equipment Required: This will be a long, potentially hot day. In addition to a quick pre-departure breakfast, everyone should have lunch, good snacks to eat as we move, and at least 2.5 liters of water. You will need sunscreen, sunglasses and layers in case it is windy on top. For the technical part of the climb everyone must have a harness, helmet, 2 prusiks with carabiners and an ATC or belay device. If you have a personal anchor system, that would be helpful too. Please wear shoes with a stiff enough sole that you can climb in them. I also recommend gaiters as we will descend through scree. We will have group gear so bring a large enough pack to help. It will be a fun, beautiful and long day! People may want to stop for dinner or bring snacks for the ride home.

Trip Report

Our climbing team met at the Thielsen Trail head on Friday night. There may never have been a more positive team on the mountain. We hit the trail at 5:30 am, just after daylight, and didn't find enough snow on the trail to even have a snowball fight. Everyone summited, some for their first Thielsen, by 11:00 am, and we rapped down leaving the threatening clouds behind us. Though picking our way through the scree was a little sketch, we successfully made it back the cars around 3:30. The threatening clouds made for great temperatures without stealing our views. Congratulations to Linda and Shannon for their first Thielsen. Thanks to Joshua and Doug for their relentless enthusiasm and to Jen for being an efficient, competent, joyful Assistant Climb Leader.
