Description:

Mt Washington is my favorite climb in Oregon. We'll hike in about 5 miles to the rocky ridge. We'll pick our way across the rocky ridge to the notch. We'll then put our harnesses on and rope up. The rock climbing section is three rope lengths of climbing. We'll then down climb two pitches on the fixed line. The third pitch we'll rappel off. This in an intermediate level climb. You need to have completed another mountain where you are required to rock climb like Mt Thielsen or Broken Top, or be VERY comfortable with climbing and exposure. Count on an 11 - 14 hour day. We will drive up, climb, celebrate and drive back to Eugene in the same day.

Also bring a harness, helmet, rappel device, two prussiks, two personal leashes, five locking caribiners. You'll want layers for a cold morning and a possible chilly summit, but very warm time hiking in. I recommend trekking poles on this climb.

Trip Report

Eight climbers summited Mt Washington on July 13. We were really fogged in at the beginning of the climb. We were concerned we wouldn't be able to summit, we thought the low clouds might make the rock wet. We started at the trailhead around 5am. By the time we got to the notch the low clouds had cleared enough we could climb. The rock was dry. There was snow ALMOST on the route up. it was just cleared enough off the ridge that we could proceed on the normal trail. We had a couple of incidents on the climb that reminded me as a leader to: 1. go over the rules and verbal cues with the climber right behind the leader and 2. remind the climbers to stay on the designated climb route, especially on the crumbly mts in Oregon. Everyone was safe. There were no injuries. It was a great day.
