New Years Day- Butte-Short

Description:

The hike is not a race –but a gathering for us to ring in the New Year. You can set your own pace with others on the main trail to the summit. This is 15th annual New Years Hike that continues a long Club tradition. We usually gather on top near the south end where we keep a low profile so as not to impact others.

The meeting place is not at 52nd Street. Keep driving another ¼ mile to the paved trailhead parking lot

Trip Report

Rain and cold did not stop Obsidians and many other hikers from celebrating the New Year on top of the Butte. We left the Spencer Butte paved parking lot at 9:15 and greeted the the Martin Street hikers on their way back down. We joined the 52nd Willamette group on top for the traditional photo and treats. Thanks to Jim Northrop and Dave Cooper who were the sweeps on the way back down making sure we did not leave anyone shivering back on the Butte. Another thanks to Beth, a hiker who volunteered to take the photo of smiling Obsidians with Darko\'s phone.
