Trip Report

Don Hunter’s slide show entitled "The New Oregon Trail" proved to be a unique experience for a full house of Obsidians.

Grand views of Oregon were shown with much the same content (accompanied by music and a minimum of narrative) as in the TV program, "Hasn’t God Been Good to Oregon" featured locally (KVAL) during holidays. However, Don projected panoramic views that required the use of three screens that spanned almost the entire Lodge wall! Four projectors and an array of control modules were used. The photos were taken with an ordinary camera! (Formidably high standards of slide presentation have been set for us amateurs!) Some photos of historical interest were included. A change of pace was experienced with interludes of close-ups entitled "Patterns of Color" and "Oregon Wildflowers". All in all the show was a gourmet visual feast.

Don, a U of O professor emeritus, has recorded many Eugene sights and sounds since the early ’30s. Presentations entitled "Eugene, Then and Now" and "The Pageant Years" were shown at the Hult Center during the recent Eugene Celebration. Some years ago his efforts were largely instrumental in preventing Rock Mesa (south of the Three Sisters) from being mined for its pumice. His three-screen panoramic technique was used to great advantage to capture the legislators’ attention. These studies would appear to be good candidates for future Lodge potluck shows. - Bep Fontana
