Trip Report

Our 11th Annual New Years hike with groups departing from three trailheads made for a festive gathering on top. Our group was the first on top but the the other two groups quickly appeared. We gathered together at south end where we kept a low profile sharing snacks and conversation. Thanks to Clara who cleaned the entrance steps at the parking lot the day before. For the record: Since 2009 around 240 hikers have participated in celebration of the new year. Other leaders have been Steve Cordon, Mike Smith, and Darko Sojak. 2009 –7 hikers, 2010 - 2 hikers, 2011 – 9 hikers, 2012 – 21 hikers., 2013 – 21 hikers, 2014 – 22 hikers, 2015 – 17 hikers, 2016 – 31 hikers, 2017 – 8 hikers , 2018 – 35 hikers (2 groups), 2019 – 22 (2 groups), 2020 – 50 hikers ( 3 groups). Trip reports from other decades show that Obsidians have had a tradition of hiking the Butte on New Years Day.
