Trip Report

The Obsidian trip to Newport was most enjoyable with a sunny day on Saturday, rain on Sunday. The group stayed at the attractive Dunes Motel which faced the ocean. The Devil's Punch Bowl, eight miles north of Newport, was a pleasant lunch stop. A great deal of time was spent on Newport's historic bay front where a highlight was a visit to the Underseas Gardens where visitors descended into a viewing chamber on the ocean floor to marvel at the amazing underwater world. The group watched the seals feeding in the bay, the charter boats coming in to the docks with large catches of fish, the processing of shrimp at the Bumblebee Cannery, and last, but not least, eating at Mo's restaurants.

On the return Sunday at the south end of the Bay Bridge, the O.S.U. Marine Science Center offered an aquarium, museum, and a film on "Octopuses." The Center revealed a wealth of knowledge about the Newport area and the sea. A beautiful film "The Forces of Nature" was shown at the Cape Perpetua Visitors' Center, one the traveler shouldn't miss the next time he goes over to the coast.

The participants were Muriel Aufderheide, Lois and Perry Baker, Margaret Barnard, Mary Bridgeman, Ella Carrick, Marie Carstensen, Gerry Fehly, Bette Hack, Jane Hilt, Virginia Horton, Jennelle Moorhead, Ruth Nichols, Ione Pierron, Bonnie Rickard, Reta Ridings, Catherine Ritter, Myrtle Smith, Hazel and Cliff Stalsberg, Helen Stovall, Mary-Douglass Stovall, Thelma Watson, and leaders Betty Mae Stamm and Virginia West.
