Trip Report

Everybody arrived early on their journey from Eugene to Newport so that we could all meet our tour guide Tim Sinquefield promptly at ten o’clock. He immediately took us to the bridge of the NOAA research vessel where he answered our questions. Then we had a mini tour of other parts of the NOAA research vessel while it undergoes repairs. This Newport-based NOAA vessel, the Bell M. Shimada, was named after a Japanese American who had been interned during WWII because of his Japanese heritage. He eventually made his way to become a translator for the U.S. and served with distinction and loyalty. After the tour we had lunch in Newport’s Nye Beach District. We were rewarded with sunshine and blue skies in a week of rainy weather.
