Description:

UPDATE: Darko is going to be the assistant leader as we spread out into two groups. North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg, exit 135, Wilbur, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance - around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The scenic up and down loop has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas, meadows, and views of the North Fork of the Umpqua River.
One will need to watch for poison oak in a few places. Expect a few sections of the trail to be muddy depending on rainfall in recent days. We should start hiking around 9:30 and complete the hike between 2:30and 3:00. It will be a steady moderate pace with a late lunch so bring some snacks. The elevation gain is like doing Pisgah twice.

Trip Report

Seventeen of us in eight cars left Eugene at 7:45am and headed south on I-5 to Wilbur, Exit 135. All successfully made made the turn on North Bank Road to the West Trailhead where the leader breathed a sigh of relief. This is a great view hike on old ranch roads climbing quickly to ridges that follow around the top of a valley, with panoramas of the Umpqua River and the surrounding mixed forests and open oak savannas. On the downhill section of the loop. we were amazed to see so many showers of shooting stars and houndstongue spreading out over the hillside. Clouds with a little rain and a little wind did not prevent us from describing it as perfect weather for our hike—not too hot. Thanks to Darko for keeping us socially distanced and moving in the right direction, to Steve Johnson for bringing up the rear and to all who loved the hike.

The July Bulletin is online now.
