Description:

Meet at Amazon Park, 28th & Hilyard entrance parking lot to make arrangements car pooling. I will provide maps. North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg, exit 135, Wilbur, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance with a North Bank Ranch Sign - around 1 hour and 15 minutes. Do not go to the Comstock Trailhead. The scenic up and down loop has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas, meadows, and views of the North Fork of the Umpqua River. One will need to watch for poison oak in a few places. We should start hiking around 9:30 and complete the hike around 2:30. It will be a moderate pace stopping to enjoy the views with a late lunch so bring some snacks. The elevation gain is like doing Pisgah twice. If you were on this hike April 10th, expect to see new flowers. If rain is definitely in the forecast, I might change the hike to Pisgah.

Trip Report

The North Bank Habitat is a ten-square mile preserve (ranch) overlooking the North Umpqua River near Roseburg.
It was a comfortable temperature to enjoy hiking up and down the open rolling hills that provided 360 degree panoramic views of the North Fork of the Umpqua River and surrounding foothills. We took our time to enjoy the madrone trees that were flowering with dense drooping clusters of white flowers. The hillsides were filled with purple and white iris that seemed to compete for space with the spectacular poison oak. The unexpected appearances of a vibrant pink flower, silene hooker, was a show stopper. Marguerite led a short detour on the Thistle Trail to see the spectacular grove of madrone trees where we visited with hikers from the Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club. That is why the parking lot was filled with cars! We left Eugene at 7:45 am and completed the hike around 2:30.
