Description:

The North Bank Habitat is a ten-square mile preserve (ranch) overlooking the North Umpqua River near Roseburg. The scenic up and down loop on old ranch roads has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas, meadows, and views of the North Fork of the Umpqua River. I am hoping the clusters of red berries on the Pacific madrone trees along the Blacktail Ridge Road from the West Entrance are spectacular as last year.
Directions: From I-5, take exit 135 Wilbur, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. There could be one muddy section. We should start hiking around 9:45 and complete the hike around 3:00 It will be a steady almost moderate pace with a late lunch so bring some snacks or two lunches. The elevation gain is like doing Mt.Pisgah twice.

Trip Report

The North Bank Habitat is a ten-square mile preserve (ranch) overlooking the North Umpqua River near Roseburg that offers less crowded trails. Under sunny skies, we soon discarded a few layers of warm clothing and then took our time to enjoy the continuous spectacular views while hiking up and down the rolling hills. The first treats were the clusters of various shades of red berries on the Pacific madrone trees along the Blacktail Ridge Road from the West Entrance. What a contrast from the spring sprays of small bell-like flowers. The second treat was our lunch viewpoint celebration of Lynn’s trip award for the Big 200 with chocolate zucchini bread. The third treat was double dip ice cream at Rice Hill. We recommend the pumpkin pie flavor.
