Description:

The North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg, exit 135, Wilbur, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The up and down loop hike has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas, meadows, and views of the Umpqua River. One can easily avoid the poison oak at this time of year. I expect the few muddy sections to be dry. We should start hiking around 9:30 and complete the hike around 2:30. It will be a steady moderate pace with a snack break and a late lunch. The weather forecast looks good. Pace will be almost moderate as we enjoy the views and possibly some early signs of spring for the last day of spring break.

Trip Report

Hiking these old ranch roads that climb quickly to ridges that follow around the top of a valley provided constant panoramas of the Umpqua River and the surrounding mixed forests and open oak savannas . It was the first time for Lorraine to hike the trail and she was most impressed with the ancient madronne trees especially on the Thistle Ridge side trail. On the downhill section of the loop, we were amazed to see so many showers of shooting stars, fawn lilies, baby blue eyes, and houndstongue spreading out over the hillside. We met only two other hikers on our quiet four hour hike. It was perfect hiking weather—not too hot.
