Description:

The North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg, exit 135, Wilbur, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The up and down loop hike has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas, meadows, wildflowers and views of the Umpqua River. Probably a muddy section. We should start hiking around 9:30 and complete the hike around 2:30. It will be a steady moderate pace, gathering on the hill tops. Easy to avoid poison oak. Plan for a snack break at a picnic table and then a late lunch. If weather forecast is not favorable, I will change the destination to Mt. Pisgah.

Trip Report

With the sun trying to shine through the clouds, sunscreen and a sun hat were needed. Next time! A short detour on the Thistle Ridge Trail to see the stately madrone trees should be a required stop! On up the ridge we anchored the vintage picnic table for our marionberry muffin snack. On our way down, after lunch, the plethora of houndstongue, a few shooting stars and fawn lilies distracted us from the muddy and soggy trail sections. The 1% chance of rain turned out to be just a few sprinkles. Hiking with friends on the boundary ridge with the expansive views of the Umpqua River valley made this a special spring hike!
