Description:

Plan to spend a few days camping, hiking and sightseeing along the scenic North Umpqua River. We’ll be camping three nights at Deer Flat Group Site (Horseshoe Bend Campground) located 48 miles east of Roseburg. The campground is sheltered from traffic noise on Hwy 138 and access to the North Umpqua River is within walking distance. This large group site is able to accommodate up to 70 people but I'm capping it at 25 so we'll have plenty of room to spread out. You will find individual camp sites within the group site that are flat and shaded. The site is equipped with flush toilets, water spigots, campfire rings, and wooden picnic tables throughout. There is also a central gathering area where we can make campfires at night. Tents, travel trailers and rvs are welcome. There are no rv hookups and generators are not welcome on this trip. The campground is located adjacent to the N. Umpqua River so swimming is an option, but the water will be cold. River running is also an option for those with extensive whitewater experience, however hiking will be the intended focus of this outing. There are numerous hiking options in the area and even a hot spring nearby. You are welcome to break off into smaller groups and do your own thing. Activities will be suggested but not expected of you.

Cost: $30.00 per person, non-refundable unless a replacement is found. Covers 3 nights @ Deer Flat Group Site, welcome snacks Wed. afternoon, and campfire wood.

Trip Report

The Deer Flat Group Site is located within the Horseshoe Bend Campground. The turnoff can be easy to miss as there is no campground sign on Hwy 38 but campground is located a few miles past Steamboat Inn. Turn right on Forest Service Road 4750 then right again on Road 4750-001 into the campground. The site is equipped with a central group gathering area, several picnic tables, flush toilets and plumbed sinks in the bathroom, and a few drinking water spigots throughout camp.

Note the group site specs indicate it is able to accommodate up to 70 people but there are only about 10 individual campsites. I advise no more than 25 people to be able to comfortably spread out and have room to park cars. Access to the North Umpqua River is within walking distance and has an access area at the lower campground for sitting in the sun or splashing in the water while staying away from the fast moving current.

The most popular trails on this trip were Twin Lakes and eastern segments of the N Umpqua Trail. The N Umpqua Trail west of camp has been burned and is very exposed to the hot sun.
