Description:

This will be our second trail maintenance activity this season into the Obsidian Limited Entry Area (Obsidian Trail) off of McKenzie Pass. On Saturday morning we'll pick up our tools at the ranger station at 8AM before backpacking in 6 miles to our base camp. Over the course of the weekend we'll be working on a restoration project in the Sunshine Meadows area where we'll be placing check dams to rehabilitate a user trail. We'll be joined by other McKenzie Wilderness Rangers as well as Forest Service Wilderness Rangers. We'll head out early Monday afternoon to the trailhead. In order to volunteer you must be registered with the Forest Service as a volunteer in advance of the trip.

Trip Report

We started the hike up from Obsidian Trailhead hoping that the weather report of 20% of showers and partly sunny would hold true. We continued up the trail as the weather continued to get worse, but still hoping for it to clear. When we arrived at Sisters Spring, we decided it was too exposed to camp at our normal spot so we headed down to Sunshine Meadow to drop our packs and start working on the meadow.

While we were working on the meadow the weather continued to deteriorate, we were socked in with fog while also being hit with rain and wind. Since we were working in the meadow while walking through the waist high wild flowers our clothing was completely soaked through. After stopping for the day, we decided we weren’t going to dry out. We packed up camp, and headed back down the trail head, reaching the truck just before dark.

We did manage to get quite a few check dams installed as well as picked up some trash and got rid of an illegal fire ring in the Obsidian area during our outing.
