Description:

AS OF 7/14 WE NEED AN ADDITIONAL DRIVER

NOTE THE EARLY START TIME (beat the heat)

A weekday hike for those of us who prefer that. Trail info: Sullivan's book #45.

On 7/14 there were few bugs and maybe 1/2 mile of the trail had some snow, much of which will be melted by 7/22. There are several easy stream crossings. Wildflowers are good. Views are exceptional.

The hike is steady (but not steep) uphill going in. It crosses a small burn and a substantial lava field, both of which can be hot and dry.

A moderate pace on a trail like this, including occasional stops to enjoy the view, is maybe 2 mph.
Folks who want to hike faster have PCT options.

Driving time is 1.5+ hour each way.

Trip Report

Left 7 a.m., leisurely pace had us back to Springfield at 5 p.m. Few bugs and very little snow on trail. Good flowers and views. It was upper 80s in town but comfortable hiking temperature in the mountains.
