Trip Report

Eleven Obsidians started out from the nearly empty Gold Lake sno-park under less than ideal conditions for snowshoeing. Temperature was 37 degrees under heavy overcast skies with a light misty precipitation falling. We made our way up to the Westview Shelter on 1-2 feet of packed snow. From there, I guided the group off trail, thinking we could bushwhack to another trail that would take us to the Odell overlook. I was mistaken and it ended up being a good mile or more through heavy forest and traversing steep sidehills that caused some grief. We all eventually made it though to the overlook where we stopped for lunch. The views were less than ideal with low clouds and some fog still over the lake. We headed back on the marked trails to the Westview Shelter and then back to the sno-park. This can be a spectacular snowshoe during winters when the snow pack is normal or above, but this winter, conditions are marginal at best.
