Description:

If you missed the Obsidian hike to Olallie Mountain on August 3, here's another chance! This hike provides great views of the High Cascade peaks from Diamond Peak in the south to Mount Hood in the north.
We'll start at the Pat Saddle Trailhead and hike through a mixed conifer forest (with some burned areas) and several open meadows. The first 1.5 miles is a very gentle incline, only gradually increasing in steepness approaching the summit. We'll plan on having lunch at the summit, which has 360 degree views. The old fire lookout has burned and there is no shade at the top, so be prepared. But the views are spectacular.
Please read the Covid-19 protocols on the Obsidian website prior to the hike. Participants will manage their own transportation. Note to drivers: the last 23 miles (round trip) are along gravel road 1993, but it is in good condition, with only a few potholes. (This hike was scouted on July 10.)

Trip Report

Our group of 12 hikers met no one else on the trail the entire day. The trail had plenty of late summer wildflowers, with fireweed being the star of the show, but we also saw asters, pearly everlasting and lots of beargrass gone to seed. We had lunch on the summit next to the recently burned fire lookout. Visibility was limited due to forest fires elsewhere in Oregon, and the Cascade peaks were only visible in outline. But temperatures were very pleasant and we all enjoyed the forest we hiked through to and from the summit.
