Past Activity

Opie Dilldock

 • Start date: 07/16/2025

 • Start time: 7:00 AM

Description:

This hike will take us up to the Collier Glacier viewpoint above Opie Dilldock pass. We'll start at the Matthieu Lakes trailhead near Lave Camp Lake which connects to the PCT then goes to South Matthieu Lake. I plan on making a stop at Yapoah Crater for a quick trip to the top. We'll have lunch at the Collier Glacier viewpoint then return on the same trail taking the lower trail past North Matthieu Lake. If the weather is warm enough, we'll stop for a swim at Matthieu Lake. This is an all day adventure that offers great views and wildflowers. Some of us will stop at Takoda's restaurant after the hike.

I've acquired 12 permits for this hike. In addition to the $15 fee for riders, there is an additional $1 fee for the hiking permit.

Please note that the 7am departure time is just that, the time we depart. Try to show up about 15 minutes early to allow time to organize the transportation.

Trip Report

Scheduling hiking trips to the Cascades in the middle of July is always a gamble. Will it be too hot, will there be too much snow, or will it be too smoky? After already postponing this hike once because of the late-season snow, I chose to take a chance and keep this trip on the schedule. This turned out to be a good choice. While the day was warm, a constant breeze kept our group cool. There was plenty of snow, but we were able to find our way, and we enjoyed glissading on the way back. There was some haze in the air, but not enough to spoil the great views from the Collier Glacier viewpoint. After our excellent hike, some of us enjoyed a very refreshing swim in South Matthieu Lake.
