This is our season kick-off — a leisurely trip to see spring on our way to Florence leaving Shopko (Coburg Rd.) at 8:00 am. The bus will take us to Florence via Hwy 126. You will be on your own for coffee break and to explore Old Town. You’ll again board the bus for our trip north on Hwy 101 to Yachats for lunch (cost included) at the Adobe Resort. There will be an optional short hike along the beach and a stop in town to see what’s available. Next we will head up Hwy 101 to Waldport for a stop at the Alsea Bay Interpretive Center (emphasis is the Coast Bridges). We will then head inland on Hwy 34 to Philomath, Corvallis and Hwy 99 W, on to Eugene. Note: Hwy conditions may cause a change in itinerary, but rest assured this will be a fun trip. Home by 5:00 pm.

Cost: members: $45; non-members $47; due March 2.

Trip Report

We left Shopko parking lot at 8 AM for our first trip of the year. As I look forward and backward, it was the best weather—some light rain, but we had full sun on the ocean during lunch. We traveled Highway 126 to Florence, with our snack and rest stop at the Gingerbread House Restaurant, where all were treated to warm gingerbread and coffee. In Florence, we drove the Old Town main street and everyone had 45 minutes to shop. Then we turned north on Highway 101 with great views of the ocean to Yachats, with lunch served at the Adobe Inn. The sun shone, so the view of the breakers was fantastic. The waves were very high. We drove north to Waldport, with a stop at the Alsea Bridge Interpretive Center. We continued north to Newport before heading inland. After Corvallis, we had our afternoon break at Hazelnut Hill, where most had ice cream and many bought nuts and other goodies. We arrived back in Eugene by 5:30. It was a great day. Trip leader was Liz Reanier; members: 17, nonmembers: 4.
