Trip Report

There were just enough placemats for a larger than expected crowd. What an interesting evening for all of us to hear Rex and Shirley Stevens tell about their two years in the Philippines with the Peace Corps. Rex explained the purposes of the Peace Corps and then shared how they became part of the community where they were assigned. They were located on the island of Leyte, one of 7,000 islands in the Philippines. Shirley worked with the health services while Rex worked with a multitude of problems such as water supply and sanitation. Their slides and personal anecdotes of how they built their house and fulfilled their assignment left us all wondering if we had the stamina and sense of humor to tackle such a job. Rex and Shirley's stories and slides revealed their sensitivity and their willingness to give. Thank you, Rex and Shirley, for giving us the evening! - Jan Baker-Jacobsen
