Trip Report

Perseid Meteor Shower Overnight Trip Report
With smoke in the air from local fires and 100+ temps in Eugene, an intrepid crew of 8 wandered up to the north side of Waldo Lake to camp by a noname lake between Waldo and Lower Rigdon Lake on trail 3555. There was some doubt if the smoke would clear but it eventually did for some prime star gazing. There were a handful of amazing streaks of light seen but you had to be patient for them. With the exception of an occasional plane, the quiet seemed nearly absolute.
Skies remained clear in the morning and we got to see Waldo Lake which had been shrouded in smoke the day before. The final course for breakfast which was provided by Russ was a blueberry parfait with hand whipped cream! Thanks to Kathy for assisting with the whipping. We left our backpacks behind and did a 5 mile loop around Rigdon Butte with daypacks. There were many lakes with suitable campsites for future trips.
Upon returning to camp we could see the winds had shifted and smoke was beginning to work its way across Waldo Lake. By the time we hiked the 2 miles back to the parking lot in near 90 degree heat, the smoke had covered the lake again but not enough to discourage us from a quick refreshing dip in Waldo Lake.
