Description:

Departure Place: 25th and University, Main gate with signage—not the dead end road to the Abbey. The pace will be not quite moderate. First we will find the marker for a math professor and then start 4 ½ mile loop hike with the first stop at Sweet Life Bakery for dessert/pie or a slice of pizza pie at Hey Neighbor. We can eat outside if room or take our treats to Hendrichs Park (at 1:59?) and then wind our way back. We could reverse the route depending on interest, flowers, and weather. Watch for updates. Come early if you would like to explore the cemetery. There are bathrooms at Hendricks Park! If PI is truncated to seven decimal places, it becomes 3.1415926, making Pi celebration on March 14 at 1:59.26.

Trip Report

If PI is truncated to seven decimal places, it becomes 3.1415926, making Pi occur on March 14 at 1:59.26am or pm—hopefully the time we would be eating pie at Sweet Life Petite Bakery. We met at 1:00 at the Masonic Cemetery and then during introductions shared the date of our last math class. Our first stop was the "mathematician's bench” to hunt for a spelling mistake in the marker for Dr.Paul Civin (1919-2005), a U of O math professor and also an Obsidian. We walked a few of the trails to marvel at the fawn lilies, flowering currant, and spring beauty flowers. It was time to casually sprint to the bakery to enjoy the coffee and treats at their outdoor seating. Ginny then led us on the less traveled Fairmount Blvd, Elk Avenue, and Hubbard Lane to the Hendricks Park Rhododendron Garden—Surprise! A few were in bloom. Hiking the side trail along Fairmount Blvd to city streets, we soon gathered at the Masonic Cemetery to do the math for our PI celebration. Sadly we could not agree on the mileage, elevation or number of steps but we were sure the trip perhaps took three hours.Time flies when you are having fun. Two hikers wanted to see Hope Abbey and we were so fortunate that a Friend of Masonic Cemetery invited us to take a look inside.
