Description:

A SECOND TRIP HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 4 AT 1PM.

Historian/storyteller Randy Gudeika will lead a 2 mile walk through Pioneer Cemetery, Wednesday October 27, 1 to 3pm. At this historically invaluable site he will tell haunting stories of tragedies, forgotten wars, murder, as well as intriguing Eugeneans. This will be his 16th individual walking tour of old areas of Lane County since 2018. His walks are based on extensive research, are factually true, and entertaining. Meet at the cemetery side of E 18th & Potter, across from Central Lutheran Church

this walk is a saunter around the cemetery, not a conditioning hike, and there will be periods of standing and listening so feel free to bring layers to keep warm!

You may wish to offer Randy a voluntary honorarium of up to $5 which is what he customarily receives when leading tours for the public.

Trip Report

We had an interested group of 15 as we sauntered through the Pioneer Cemetery -listening to Randy's stories of the lives and deaths of those buried there. From early stories of brutal settlers ravaging indigenous peoples, to those who lost their lives from the Spanish flu of 1908, to women's suffrage leaders who achieved the right for women to vote in Oregon during their lifetime - we deepened our understanding for the history of the region. A few participants discovered or sought out the location of distant relatives buried in this historic cemetery. We encountered a few sprinkles mid-walk, which enhanced the mystique of the walk. The time ended at the monument and gravestones for those who fought for the union Army during the Civil War. Who knew that Jefferson Davis tried escaping capture by wearing his wife's hat and scarf? Randy has graciously agreed to lead a second walk for Obsidians no November 4 at 1pm.
