Trip Report

This 2nd walk through Pioneer Cemetery made up largely of folks from the wait list took place on a overcast day which matched the mood and mystery of our time with Randy. As we walked from tombstone to tombstone, we heard stories of early settlers and their skirmishes with indigenous people, family disputes ending in murder, brave soldiers from WW1 who died after landing in Europe from the Spanish flu contracted on the ship, yet buried near one another back in the cemetery and towns no longer on the map such as Vanport, a town built to support the ports and industry at the time. Randy’s stories enabled us to see a much more clear picture of earlier times In Oregon, the challenges and the culture of those whose names live on buildings and street names. He highlighted the social inequities not always captured in history books – which provided greater appreciation for learning from our history.
