Description:

Ganderflanking is an old word from the county of Wiltshire in southwest England. It means “aimlessly messing about” or “walking about aimlessly.” It is also associated with “larking about” which is defined as “to behave in a silly way because you think it is funny.” The hike leader won’t do much leading. We’ll just start walking and make decisions impulsively at trail junctions. By now you can guess that the listed distance and elevation gain don’t hold much meaning. We’ll want to stay together but there might be assistant leaders that go off with groups on sort of a sub-wander. But we will have to rendezvous at some point. After all, we do have to get back to the parking lot. Trust me. Only once did a practice ganderflanking take Carla and I on an unfamiliar trail that became a “user” trail, then a game trail, and then “if we go around those blackberries we should hit trail #3”. Maps will be provided to avoid a situation like that by staying on legit trails and roads. Pisgah has enough miles of trails to keep us wandering aimlessly for hours.

Trip Report

For this hike everyone was given a number. When we stopped at a trail junction the person with the next number chose which way to go. Starting on trail 17 our selection was then trail 3, up Swing hill, back on 3 to trail 4. At the intersection of 4 and 4E the group split up with the assistant leader taking a group directly to the top. Then they went down via 6, 36, 3, a powerline road, and thru the Arboretum. The other group took a route of 4, 24, 2, and 1 to reach the top. Then it was down trail #1 or a combination of 1,3,7, and 17 to get back to the parking lot. Starting in the fog but finishing in the sun, the hikers got a chance to tread some sections they may not have been on before.
