  • End date: 03/21/2017

Description:

We will start on the Arboretum trails making our way eventually to the ZigZag trail and over to Trail #1 to the summit. On the way down, we will take Trail 4. People will have the option of heading back to the cars or going on around swing hill to see wood violets. I hope to hike in areas where we will see the most spring flowers. The elevation and the mileage could vary depending on the weather and our interests. This is not a botany hike. Expect to see snow queen, spring beauty, trillium, hound’s tongue.

Trip Report

Flowers were the signs of spring: spring beauty, fawn lily, trillium, baby blue eyes, camas, hound's tongue, Indian plum, wild iris, yellow wood violet, and snow queen. We heard and then spotted a horned owl on the South Boundary trail. We began our at the Baker flower garden and then followed the path along the river until we intersected with the South Boundary Trail that had the best flower show. Doreen led us up the steep not often used Trail 35 that connected with the main trail. Doreen also shared stories about the grouse flower (snow queen) and spring box. From the summit, we took took trail 1, 4, and 3 to loop around Swing Hill. The trip took around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
