Description:

Look for the yellow fee box. I'll try to have my car in the row below so that is is easy for us to meet, sign up. etc. Sunset is at 4:37 PM. If we are surprised with clear skies, we will join a crowd of solstice hikers looking for the sun rays to light up the Mt. Pisgah Sighting Pedestal. I’ve given us an hour to so that we hike up Trail 7 and 4 to the summit. We won’t linger after sunset but quickly head down so that we have some light on the trail. If it rains, it will be a quick trip up and down on the main trail. Bring headlamps. It is National Flashlight Day. Two of our members are in a holiday concert at Wildiish Theater at 7:30 so the pizza option probably won't work.

Trip Report

"It's clear on top!" was the unexpected greeting from downhill hikers. Walking out of the gloomy fog to a surreal view, one hiker comented, " The sun is setting in a sea of white puffy clouds." Another said, "The sun's light seems as if it is red lava erupting behind the clouds." It felt like we were in a spaceship. The view to the east was of the snow capped mountains and snowy foothills. As we started down, the sky was now painted with pinks and reds. We saw the waxing crescent moon before the fog enveloped us. We started the hike at 3:30 and all of us were back at the cars by 5:30.
