Trip Report

August 13, weather perfect; twenty-nine travelers all on time and ready to leave the South Eugene High parking lot at 8 a.m. for Portland's Washington Park. By 10:30 a.m. three smaller groups, each lead by a Zoo guide, were ready to tour the Cascade Nature Center, the Penguin habitat and the Alaskan Tundra. These realistically natural exhibits are among the finest animal settings to be found in American zoos. The guides gave us a wealth of information about the animals, their care, new exhibits soon to open and future plans for additional zoo changes.

The Bear Walk Cafe was the lunch stop. By one o'clock twenty persons were on their way to meet Apatosaurus, Stegosaurus, Pentaceratops and "friends" at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Other individual choices during the afternoon included the Zoo train ride, a visit to the Japanese Garden and/or more Zoo exploring. Several persons examined the Smithsonian Traveling Exhibit at the Forestry Center. "Explorers" were Bernice Ballaine, Ingrid Carmichael, Tom Carmichael, "Buck" Carter, Maxine Chism, Nan Cline, Amy Clugston, Virginia DeMers, Wynona Eden, Ed Eden, Loene Ellickson, Minnie Foskett, LaVerne Frazier, Paul Furrey, Betty Hack, Ruth Hawksley, Jane Hilt, Virginia Kapsa, Loretta Mitchell, Melvin Mitchell, Marilyn Morris, Bob Morris, Ila Morris, Grace Smith, Ruth Williams, Hawke Williams, Mildred Weatherby, leaders Jan Gund and Frances Newsom with Baxter Shaw as coach driver.
