Trip Report

Seven hopeful skiers left Crescent Lake Sno-Park at 9:30 AM with blue skies overhead and plenty of recent snow under foot. Trail breaking started right away since no one had skied in since the last heavy snows. The summit of Redtop was reached at 1:30PM and our group hunkered down for lunch with crystal clear views from Mt. Jefferson to Mt. Thielsen. Then came the challenge. The snow was in the worst possible condition of thick breakable crust and a heavy deep soft layer underneath. There was plenty of practice falling down and working hard to stand back up. The conditions improved as we descended, and by 4:30 PM everyone was back at the cars. It was a good day, and the trip proved the old adage, that a ski day with bad conditions is still better than no ski day at all.
