Description:

Redtop Mountain is one of the most accessible summits for ski touring in the central cascades. A steady climb at a moderate grade, and then several options for the descent. Obsidians ski this every winter. Climbing skins are needed, with alpine touring or telemark skis. Bring lunch, warm clothing, and hot drink in a thermos.

Trip Report

Snowpack this winter is near normal, but no snow had fallen for several days before our trip. We found a rather hard crust around the Crescent Lake sno-park, which gradually softened as the day warmed up. Fortunately there was little direct sun, and so we did not have the snow sticking to our skis. Our group of six included new member Wim, who has taught ski mountaineering courses for the Mazamas for many years, but had never skied Redtop, as well as familiar non-members who have skied it perhaps a dozen times or more. Our group was missing steadfast leader Harold Thompson, who had a performance with the Eugene Concert Choir. We hope he might lead a second trip later this winter. We spent about six hours sking the 13 kilometer out and back and four of the six of us reached the windy summit.
