Description:

This is a climb skills review session at Skinners Butte Columns. We will have a few ropes set up by 4:30 PM and give people a chance to reivew the basic knots, how to belay a top-roped climber, how to rappel, and how to ascend a fixed line when climbing easy rock. If time and space permit we will also do some top-roped climbing of some of the more challenging routes at the columns. No need to show up right at 4:30 - we will have the ropes set up until 7:30 so feel free to come at any time during this interval. People participating should have attended the Basic Climb school or have equivalent basic rock climbing experience. If you have questions call or email the leader (email suesulliwat@gmail.com)

Trip Report

After having the Rock Skills practice rained out twice at the columns, I was grateful for a sunny day on June 2 as I prepared to head to the columns. And, wouldn't you know it... as I drove from sunny south Eugene I saw a black cloud hovering over Skinner's Butte - sure enough! There was a brief downpour just as we drove up to the Columns! But we waited around for a few minutes and it looked like it was going to clear up, so we went ahead and set up ropes for belay and rappel practice. People practiced knots for a few minutes while we completed the setup, then they had a chance to brush up on their rock skills that might have gotten a bit rusty over winter. We had an easy rappel and a more difficult one for people to try. The rock was too slippery for much rock climbing, but Steve Still and David Adkins proved that one could climb even wet rock in hiking boots.
