Trip Report

We left Eugene on a showery day, going via Oxbow and Smith River to Reedsport, with a stop at the Dunes Recreation headquarters, then through Coos Bay for lunch at Whiskey Run, a stop at the Bandon Cheese Factory and on to Gold Beach for the night. Early the next morning we boarded the jet boat for 52 miles up to Paradise Bar Lodge. Some hiked up and down the trail that afternoon but the next day found our more vigorous members hiking up-river past Inspiration Point and Mule Creek rapids to Marial and the museum at the mouth of Mule Creek. It and Paradise Lodge had much data on the early days along this stretch of the Rogue River. Others observed the wild life, rested and visited.

After two nights we left, well fed and pleased at our good fortune in having two clear, ideal days. The jet boat trip down river was exciting. Our coach was waiting for us at Agness, and we drove northwards around Foster Creek and across the pass headed for Powers where we stopped at a very nice park at the north edge of town. We continued on via Myrtle Point and up the North Fork of the Coquille to Gravel then up the Middle Fork past Dora and Sitkum in Brewster Valley along the historical Coos Bay Wagon Road. On the east side we dropped down the hill to Reston and then on to Lookingglass and into Roseburg for dinner stop. It was raining lightly by this time but it did not dampen our spirits. We arrived in Eugene just after 8:00 p.m. and all seemed to agree that the scenery was marvelous, the food and surroundings at Paradise Lodge were great, and we returned home well fed and contented. Our host and genial boatman was Court Boice, who made every effort to make us feel at home.

Riders were Margaret Baldwin, Rita Baxter, Helen Beck, Dick Bentsen, Ingrid Carmichael, Clair Cooley, Jane and John Corliss, Ardis Ebbighausen, Rufus Franz, Alan Griggs, Dorothy Hayes, Flora and Herman Hendershott, Jane Hilt, Ray Jensen, Bea LeFevre, Edward and Margaret Price, Myrtle Sagen, Lois Schreiner, Mary Elton Schutz, Grace Smith, Dorothy Turner, Paula Vehrs, and Ewart Baldwin and Bill Eaton (co-leaders). Don Moorhead was our driver, assisted by Evelyn Moorhead.
