Description:

Annual Rooster Rock hike east of Sweet Home NOT the one in Portland. This is not a long hike but is steady uphill to the junction of the old trail. From there to the top it climbs 750' in a half mile, which makes it rank difficult. From the top, there is a view east looking down on US 20. It's a nice lunch spot, and Rooster Rock, where the lookout once stood, is interesting. We will be in the Menagerie Wilderness. While there is a trail further beyond, it is not worth hiking, although depending upon the group and time, we could consider doing it. Stop in Cascadia Park for bathroom break on the way there. One big blowdown up the trail which is easy for small people (go under) and large people (go over). Those of us midsize have to shed the pack and go under.

Trip Report

On the nicest spring day one could have, 12 of us, including one Chemetakan, got to the Rooster Rock trailhead in mid-morning. The trail was not very muddy, the big blowdown was removed, and we went through snow at the 3200' level with more snow near the top, finding 4 others there, finishing their lunch. There were clouds stacked up along the Cascades, although we could see North and Middle Sister, and there was almost no wind. We descended past Calypso orchids, violets, and Trilliums, through a forest of green, back to the cars. Everybody did fine, and we all had a good trip.
