Description:

NEW departure place: Parking area at intersection of 42nd St and 3809 Marcola Road called Weyerhaeuser-McKenzie Natural Area Park or just meet us at rest area east of Sweet Home —also a bathroom stop and where we meet Paul — across from Point Restaurant, 6305 Highway 20. It is another 19 or so miles on Highway 20 to the Trout Creek Trailhead and the Menagerie Wilderness (established1984). It will be a moderate steady pace for the uphill hike. It would be like hiking Mt. Pisgah twice with few stops. From the junction with the old climbers' trail, it climbs 750' in the last half mile. We'll follow Obsidians social distancing guidelines, and participants will arrange their own transportation. Please indicate if you are driving and if willing to take a passenger. Limited to 8 because parking at the trailhead is limited and our impact on other hikers on narrow trail.

Trip Report

Another perfect day for our hike to Rooster Rock in the Menagerie Wilderness. From our meet-up at Foster Lake (also called Shea Viewpoint), we drove twenty-two miles to the Trout Creek Trailhead, across from Trout Creek Campground. Two of our drivers had to park along the highway since the small parking lot was full. The hike starts in the forest with a gradual incline. Darko spotted some hedgehog mushrooms which he later harvested. Snow queen, spring beauty and yellow violets were in bloom, and the rhodies should be beautiful later in the spring. After a couple of clothing adjustments, we reached a steeper section of trail—a warmup for what lay ahead. We stopped at one of two places where, through the trees, one can see Rooster Rock and the Hen, two of the remnant volcanic plugs of the Old Cascades. Our group of eight moved efficiently to the junction with the Rooster Rock climber’s trail. From there, the snow-covered trail climbed steeply to the viewpoint above the rock, where we enjoyed lunch and the wonderful views. The snowy, difficult footing prevented a side trip to the Hen—we put that off for another day. We covered the round-trip of six miles and 2300 feet in under four hours. Look for this hike on the schedule several more times this year.
