Update: Please read the article about Rooster Rock in the online April Bulletin that is now online!! If you want to carpool from Springfield, meet at Weyerhaeuser-McKenzie Natural Area at 42nd St. and 3809 Marcola Road at 8:00 am. Less than an hour drive through the Mohawk Valley to Sweet Home and our 9:00 meeting place at Foster Dam Viewpoint (also called She Viewpoint). It is next to the water but across the highway from the Point Restaurant, 6305 Highway 20. There can be optional carpooling from there to Trout Creek Trailhead where there is limited parking. The trail is narrow so will need a mask when meeting people. It will be a steady pace for the uphill hike. It would be like hiking Mt. Pisgah twice with few stops. From the junction with the old climbers' Rooster Rock trail, it climbs 750' in the last half mile. We'll follow Obsidians social distancing guidelines, and participants will arrange their own transportation.

Trip Report

Six of us carpooled from 42nd and Marcola Road to the Foster Dam (Shear) Viewpoint where we met two others in our group, driving on to meet the last three at the Trout Creek Trailhead— all on time. Unused to the high temperatures, we were happy to be in shade for the steep uphill climb to our lunch spot, the long gone staff cabin site for the pillar lookout Calypso orchids were abundant. One member had an issue with the heat and turned back and waited for us at the trailhead.
