Trip Report

At the March potluck, Val Thoenig delighted about 60 Obsidians and friends with the highlights of her 22-day grand tour of Russia. It started in Moscow, where she interviewed professors who answered all questions directed to them on the State. These interviews were arranged through the Friendship House.

The group, 40 in all, flew from one city to another on Russian airplanes which was quite an experience in itself (somehow they always got there). Within the cities they toured via air conditioned busses. The tourists were Americans except for 1 Canadian, and a Russian-Jewish lady of New York who acted as their interpreter.

Besides Moscow they visited Tblisi, Sochi, Kiev, Volgograd and Leningrad. In Volgograd, because of her connection with EWEB, she was invited to tour the Volga hydroelectric power plant, the largest in Europe. Volgograd is also the industrial center of Russia.

Val's presentation was well documented, beautiful and covered a broad scope of life in Russia. She highly recommends the tour and we all thank her for sharing it with us. - Ruth Smith
