Trip Report

Thirty-two members and guests started south through Grants Pass and over the mountains to Crescent City. We enjoyed the redwood forest in sunshine with fall coloring especially brilliant on the poison oak. After spending the night in Willits, we drove to San Francisco, arriving in time to lunch and see the sights around Fisherman's Wharf.

We boarded our ship and sailed around the San Francisco Harbor and under the Golden Gate Bridge. At Sausalito we went ashore to inspect the model of the whole bay maintained by the Army Engineers for research. Later, we sailed across the bay and up into the San Joaquin River to Stockton. The next day after touring around Stockton and Lodi, we sailed through the delta country to Sacramento. There we enjoyed seeing the reconstructed Capitol building and the nationally famous Railroad Museum. Over night on the ship, and we were back to San Francisco. At the dock we enjoyed seeing the arrival of the Ecuador Naval Training Ship, a beautiful sailing ship with a band on board and a full complement of young sailors.

We then boarded the bus for a quick trip back to Eugene arriving at 8:30 p.m. The weather was bright and beautiful during the whole trip, and the sunsets over the river will be remembered for a long time. (Editor's note - Coming home via I-5 we encountered a blizzard over the Siskiyous, and rain most of the way after reaching Oregon - the only inclement weather on this marvelous trip.)

There were 25 members and Seven guests on the trip - Mary Jane Arpin, Ewart Baldwin, Margaxet Baldwin (leader), Vera Heidenreich, Ingrid Carmichael, Sophie Christopher, Bernice Claypool, Mildred Detling, Jane Hilt, Virginia Horton, Miki Hutchison, Ruth Hopson Keen, Marry Mallery, Elizabeth Officer, Janice Pattison, Hazel Peck, Edith Post, Clarence and Dorothy Scherer, Lois Schreiner, Ada Woberg, Hazel Stalsberg, Alma Shuck, Grace Smith, Roberta Walter, Mildred Weatherby, Virginia West, Fran Whitzell, Barbara Wolfe, Freda and Harold Young, and Elene Barker.
