Trip Report

Our 8:00 departure gave us plenty of time to park near the Salem Riverfront Park and walk to the Capitol for our 10:00 guided tour up to the Golden Pioneer Observation Deck. The blooming cherry trees dominated the 360-degree view. Jim Northrop, who lived in Salem for 24 years, continued the tour of the Capitol building. We then followed him through a maze of paths, gardens, flower displays, and city streets to Willamette University, Halie Ford Museum, Elsinore Theater, Deepwood Museum and Gardens, Bush Barn Art Center, Salem Convention Center, historic Ladd and Bush Bank, and the new Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge. One hiker commented, " Even though I’ve been to Salem hundreds of times, there were places today that I have never been. I guess we don’t always appreciate our own backyards." Thanks to Jim for sharing Salem's history and beauty and arranging for the much needed lunch stop at La Margarita Mexican Restaurant. We were back in Eugene by 5:00.
