Trip Report

A break in the rainy April weather allowed twelve Obsidian walkers to explore Salem's downtown area without unfurling umbrellas or donning raingear. Our circular route took us across bridges, through nine parks, and into the State Capitol Building, where we watched the House debate and pass a bill. The cherry blossoms blooming on the Capitol Mall were a bit past their peak but still enchanting. Highlights: viewing "We Fly With Our Own Wings," a new art installation in the recently renovated Supreme Court Building consisting of more than 1600 hand-blown glass "feathers"; new exhibits in the Willamette Heritage Center, including an exhibit on the Chinese Community in downtown Salem; and an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch at Goudy Commons with several hundred Willamette University students. It was a fine day for a walk with friends.
