Trip Report

The second time around was just as good as the first. This was the second year we enjoyed going to Depoe Bay for the salmon bake held at the City Park. We left Eugene, going on I-5 to Corvallis Avery Park for our refreshment and rest stop on this beautiful September day. We then traveled Hwy. 20 to Newport with a stop at Yaquina Bay State Park where everyone gathered at the wall to look at the ocean. The weather was perfect with a light breeze but otherwise very sunny and the views of the ocean outstanding. There were four or five boats out on the water, which everyone enjoyed watching. Finally, after getting everyone away from this area and back to the bus we drove north to Depoe Bay with beautiful views of the ocean most of the way. The salmon bake is a popular but well organized event and Gary, our driver, was able to drive to the entrance to unload and was then directed to a parking space along with four or five other buses. Everyone had their tickets and most chose to eat right away. There were a number of young boys who took our tickets and delivered our meal so we did not have to stand in line. After dinner many walked over to watch the cooking of the salmon Indian style on alder stakes held by cedar strips. Each salmon takes about 45 minutes and is then wrapped in foil and delivered to the holding ovens and kept at the proper temperature until ready for serving. The program was going on with entertainment furnished by the Chinook Winds Casino and several of our group joined in the Indian dancing. The shuttle was available for those to go uptown for the shops. We left about 2:00 p.m. and drove to Lincoln City and the Connie Hansen Garden where Gary let us out and we walked into the Garden and were met by a hostess. There is also a gift shop and a small art gallery. Everyone explored the garden on their own, enjoying the many different flowers and shrubs and even a crab apple tree loaded with apples. We left about 4:00 and drove home via Hwys. 16 and 22 to the Dallas City Park for our rest stop, arriving home at 6:30. Thanks to Gary Tohl our patient bus driver, and to the hospitality committee and to Mary Lee Cheadle who took reservations and helped to organize the trip.
