Past Activity

Santiam Wagon Road, 7 Mile Hill

  • Start date: 07/01/2024

  • Start time: 8:00 AM

Description:

As part of our goal to offer hikes on all parts of the Wagon Road trail, this hike will be an out and back from the 7 Mile Hill horse camp to the House Rock area. Our course will start downhill heading west and then return over the same route. Yes, uphill at the end of our return. This segment of the Road caused problems in the first transcontinental auto race in 1905, when the cars had to drag tree trunks to slow the cars as they descended Sevenmile Hill. 1905 brakes evidently hadn't been tested on steep terrain.

Trip Report

It's customary for participants to thank the leader but for this hike it has to be the other way around. One person felt poorly as we began the 4 mile, up hill return to the car. The others reacted to the situation with helpful, caring adjustments. Thank you to all the participants on this lovely, quiet stretch of the Santiam Wagon Road Trail.
