Santiam Wagon Road Trail

  • Start date: 07/15/2024

  • Start time: 7:30 AM

Description:

The Cascade Volunteers have received a grant from Travel Oregon to continue restoration of the Santiam Wagon Road Trail (SWR) in the Willamette National Forest. The project will conclude with a celebration of the SWR at the Fish Lake Remount Station in September. As part of our expanded stewardship efforts, the Obsidians are clearing a section of trail between Tombstone Prairie and Lost Prairie Campground. There are only three logs to be cut and we have qualified people to do that work. The rest of the work will be cutting back vegetation, raking, and checking on some clogged drains. This is your day to give back to the trails we all use and enjoy.

Participants must be signed up with the Forest Service and follow their safety policies. The leaders will assist with this.

Trip Report

Sometimes when you are focused on the work, distances can be deceiving. This section of Santiam Wagon Road Trail is being cleaned up as part of this year's celebration of this historic trail. Our instructions were to make sure the "tread" is about 8 feet wide and then clear vegetation intruding within about 1-2 feet of each side and 10 feet overhead. Although the current path is wide enough to be drive-able, we found a lot of vegetation encroaching. We were busy with two power brushers, doing a bunch of pruning and a lot of raking. Because we were using power equipment on a hot day, work was called off at 1 pm. Our return to the cars was surprisingly quick. How far had we cleared? A half mile. It felt like more.
